Justice after 21 years: Bihar court convicts 10 for killing 5 Muslims

Patna: In the latest example of delayed justice and low conviction in communal riots cases, the sessions court of Nawada district in Bihar on 27th June acquitted 37 and convicted 10 for killing of five Muslims during a communal riot that occurred more than 21 years ago in the Gulni village of the district. The court will announce punishment on 29th June.
The incident took place on 12th March 1990 on the occasion of Hindu festival Holi. The cause of the incident was a path on through which members of the majority community wanted to take out procession while Muslims of the village did not allow it as it passing in front of a mosque and that procession was never taken out through that path in the past. Then a mob from majority community attacked on the Muslim villagers in which five Muslims were brutally killed in broad daylight and many others injured. The victims were identified as Noor Alam, Hafiz Bade Miyan, Peeru Miyan, Salman Miyan and Wahid Miyan.
A resident of the village Mohammad Yonus lodged an FIR against 57 people for slaughtering the Muslims. Out of 57 accused, 47 faced trial while 9 died during the trial and one is still absconding.
After 21 years, the sessions court of Judge B.P. Lal convicted 10 accused and acquitted 37 due to lack of evidences against them. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow.
The convicts are: Lattu Yadav, Vedhu Yadav, Parakash Mahto, Manoj Mahto, Dhaneshwer Yadav, Sunatan Lohar, Baldev Yadav, Jawahar Pandit, Jaggu and Sahdev Mahto
